AHC Academy for Excellence in Health Research

ACADEMIC HEALTH CENTER: ACADEMY FOR EXCELLENCE
IN HEALTH RESEARCH
2008

The AHC Academy for Excellence in Health Research is intended to serve as the highest recognition of excellence in research by AHC faculty. Those selected have contributed to the quality of the University of Minnesota through sustained, nationally and internationally- recognized health-related research in  their field.

Up to four faculty members will be selected to the AHC Academy for Excellence in Health Research each year. They will receive a recurring annual augmentation of $10,000 for five consecutive years (that may be used as an augmentation to their salary or to support their research) and a lifetime membership in the Academy.

Date for Submission: No later than March 14, 2008.
 

SUMMARY OF NOMINATION REQUIREMENTS

Nominations from all AHC schools/colleges are encouraged.

Nominee: Must be a current member of the AHC faculty.

Nominator: Must be a current member of the faculty or faculty emeritus. Self-nominations are not permitted. Nominators are responsible for submitting the completed nomination packet that includes External and Internal Supporting Letters.

Letter from Nominator: This letter should summarize the nominee’s accomplishments and the impact of those accomplishments upon the national and international community. It should list the nominee’s most prestigious research award and the 5 papers that represent the nominee’s most important research contributions. This document should not exceed four pages.

Vita:  Complete vita, including grant support.
 

LETTERS OF SUPPORT

External Supporting Letters: The nominator will contact FIVE of the nominee’s peers at other institutions. The nominator will ask the letter writers to focus on the importance of the nominee’s research to the field in question and  to the health of the nation. The letters should include a statement about the impact that the nominee’s 5 included papers have had on the field, and how the nominee compares with the top one percent of other researchers in the field. These letters are to be returned to the nominator for inclusion in the nomination packet.

Internal Supporting Letters: The nominator will contact THREE of the nominee’s colleagues at the University of Minnesota. The Nominator will ask the letter writers to comment on the nominee’s adherence to principles of integrity in research and their contributions made to collaborative research and to student research development. These letters are to be returned to the Nominator for inclusion in the nomination packet.

Number of copies: Ten collated copies of the nomination materials (binders and folders are discouraged) including:

  1. Nominator’s letter.
  2. 5 External Supporting letters.
  3. 3 Internal Supporting letters.
  4. Nominee’s CV, including grant support

SCREENING COMMITTEE MEMBERSHIP AND DUTIES

The AHC FCC will serve as the screening committee and will review the materials for each nominee**. Based on this information, the AHC FCC will carry forward some or all of the nominations for final review.

The AHC FCC will forward the materials from approved nominations to the SVP for Health Sciences, who will send them to the Selection Committee to be comprised of the current members of the Academy for Excellence. The Selection Committee will solicit input from prominent faculty at other institutions (eg., members of the National Academy of Sciences and Institute of Medicine). The Selection Committee will submit the name(s) to the Senior Vice President for the Academic Health Sciences.
 

MEMBERSHIP IN THE ACADEMY FOR EXCELLENCE IN HEALTH RESEARCH

The award will be presented annually, in September, at the AHC Awards and Recognition event. To recognize lifetime membership, the recipient’s picture will be placed on a “Wall of Honor” in a prominent location with a brief description of the recipient’s contributions.

The five-year recurring annual award of $10,000 (that may be used as an augmentation to their salary or to support their research) is subject to IRS regulations and may incur a tax obligation. The financial award will cease once an individual leaves his/her position at the University, either by termination or retirement. If an individual returns to the University in another capacity, the financial award will not continue.

The Office of the Senior Vice President for Health Sciences will be responsible for the administration of the Academy for Excellence in Health Research.

**Any member of the AHC FCC nominated to the academy for excellence will not be eligible to serve on the Screening Committee.
