U of M to Host 'Minorities in Medicine' Program

WHAT:

The University of Minnesota Department of Surgery and Health Sciences Libraries will host “Opening Doors: Minorities in Medicine,” a public program, featuring presenters who will highlight their life experiences along with new initiatives to recruit under-represented minority groups.

 The presentations will be followed by a reception.

Selwyn Vickers, M.D., chair of surgery, University of Minnesota Medical School
Deborah E. Powell, M.D., dean, University of Minnesota Medical School
Levi Watkins, Jr., M.D., surgery pioneer and human rights activist, professor of cardiac surgery at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine

BACKGROUND:

This event is held in conjunction with “Opening Doors: Contemporary African American Academic Surgeons,” a traveling exhibit which offers a glimpse into the contributions African American academic surgeons have made to medicine and medical education. The exhibit is a joint effort of the National Library of Medicine and the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture, and it will be at the University for June and July at the Bio-Medical Library in Diehl Hall.

The exhibit tells the life stories and achievements of surgical pioneers and those that continue the tradition today, along with featured displays of:
Alexa I. Canady, M.D., first African American woman pediatric neurosurgeon
LaSalle D. Leffall, Jr., M.D.,first African American president of the American College of Surgeons and the American Cancer Society
Claude J. Organ, Jr., M.D., first African American to chair a department of surgery at a predominantly white medical school
Rosalyn P. Scott, M.D., M.S.H.A., first African American woman cardiothoracic surgeon
